Review: To Faraggi, Deliana

To Faraggi Taverna, Deliana, Crete

The beautiful Deliana Gorge is often overlooked by many who visit Crete in favour of its bigger cousin, the Samaria Gorge, but that is a shame because Deliana offers so much to everyone of all walking abilities that it should be on your 'must do' list. Also on that list should be a meal at To Faraggi Taverna in Deliana village itself.

Deliana Gorge, Platanias, Chania, Crete

To Faraggi offers a taste of real Crete with its tasty and traditional food that is cooked to perfection. We went there with a group of people after an enjoyable walk through the Deliana Gorge and were amazed by the quality of the food and service given to us that we will definitely be going back.

We had arranged beforehand for a meze style meal for the 24 of us who wanted a lunch and we were not disappointed by what was served up to us on a warm September afternoon. We were greeted with welcome jugs of iced water, bottles of cold raki and plates of sliced cucumber, which went down a treat after the walk through the gorge. After this very nice entree to the meal plates of food kept being brought by Yiannis; Bread, Fava, Green Beans, Broad Beans in a beautiful sauce, Salad, Chicken with Potatoes, Pork with Celery, Lamb in a red wine sauce and I am sure there was more that I just can't recall. Wine was included and as soon as either the red or white jugs were emptied then a refreshed one appeared as if by magic.

What made the service at To Faraggi so special and worthy of mention is that across the road at their garden area, there were a lot of tables filled with other walkers and visitors to Deliana. With such a busy restaurant it takes a certain skill to keep everyone happy and the waiting and kitchen staff work together extremely well to achieve this. I really take my hat off to them.

After we thought we had finished the meal we were treated huge plates of fruit to share and a special caramel raki, alongside normal tsikoudia of course, to allow our digestion to cope with the great meal we had just experienced.

Value is superb and you will definitely be looking at your bill to see if they have forgotten to charge you for something...5 stars for price.

PROS

Food is excellent and traditional with a good sized menu.

Great value.

Very nice local wine served by the carafe.

All food is freshly cooked and cannot be beaten for taste.

Excellent service.

CONS

If you go as a large group or at busy times there may be a small queue for the toilet, but this is a very minor quibble and does not detract from a great meal in a wonderful location.
