Botonis Traditional Restaurant, Agia Marina, Chania
Found on the main road that runs through Agia Marina, Botonis Traditional Restaurant has a prime position in this busy, seasonal little town just west of Chania.
It surprises with a menu that is as sophisticated as it is beautiful and it manages to produce traditional Greek dishes with a modern twist. Botonis is also great for those people who live in the region as it is one of the few restaurants in Agia Marina that stays open for the full 12 months. In fact in Winter it has a beautiful wood burner that warms the whole restaurant and just increases the warm ambiance of the place.
The food is traditional Greek and seafood and if you are a meat lover you will love the menu. That is not to say there is nothing for a vegetarian to enjoy as they are well catered for too, not just with fresh salads but also with a wide range of traditional vegetable dishes. A special treat for the carnivores amongst you is the mixed pork plate; smoked, grilled and fried all served on a black slate to enhance the style and it tastes delicious. The group we were with also ordered bison steaks and whilst the majority were perfect one person complained that theirs was a bit tough, but as this was the first time they had tried bison they weren't sure if it was meant to be like that. The waiter was very good and offered to exchange it but this was declined and he got a free drink as well as not paying for the steak, so the service is spot on. Unfortunately on this occasion no-one ordered the seafood so we are unable to comment on theses dishes...we will have to return!
Desserts are somewhat of a specialty and they are very proud of their sweet treats. So proud that when we all declined to partake of the dessert menu they brought over a few on the house for us to share so we could taste them. Of course we didn't complain and washed down with some local raki the group decision was that we would definitely order dessert next time we were in Botonis.
Prices are as you would expect for a smart, modern restaurant but without being unrealistic. It is a great place for a special meal in a beautiful setting; the decor is expertly done and the outdoor seating area is a beautiful to sit and experience the sunset colours of the Greek sky. You know you are in a good restaurant when locals and holiday makers alike are enjoying the food and Botonis manages this with ease.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Good food and service in a nice location in the middle of Agia Marina. What they do, they do well and whilst the prices are a little higher than some neighbouring restaurants, the quality and of the dining exerience is worth it.
Great for couples and families who want that little something extra.
