Tavronitis - A Holidaymaker's Perspective

By Linda Wilks

I have been coming to North West Crete for many years in particular the Tavronitis area where I stay in a small, family run apartments. I spend time catching up with my nephew and niece in law as well as friends I have met over the years, and savour the local ambiance of the coastal waters of the Mediterranean sea, the food, wine, beer and the beautiful scenery. Tavronitis is a small town set between Platanias and Kolymbari and is a friendly bustling place full of cafes and tavernas, where you can sit alongside the locals and watch the world go by.

I stay in self catering accommodation which is comfortable and clean and run by Haridimos and Katerina, who along with their family go to great lengths to make me feel welcome and looked after. They offer meals and entertainment in their well run bar and many people like me return each year.

For me the best thing is sitting on my veranda looking out to sea, which is literally 20 meters from my doorstep. I watch the sky changing colour over the peninsula to the West and on days like today it is brooding and grey. Mostly the blue sky is reflected in the dark green sea and white rollers rock upon the shore. The pool is a few steps away and when the heat gets too much it is easy to slip into the cool pool and chill out again. Swallows swoop across the pool catching insects or sipping the water, lifting in flight by the breeze.

There is plenty to do locally and your host will happily arrange outings to the local brewery or olive oil factory and the several trolley trains will take you inland to monasteries, tavernas and places of interest. Or if your thing is going out to coastal attractions then Kolymbari has boat excursions available. There truly is something for everyone in this part of Crete.
